Roundup : I use it and have 2 dogs and a cat once you've killed the weeds a weekly hoe will keep them in check or if your bored hand weeding
unfortunatly new weeds just keep growing if your looking to keep weeds away for a long time without the work then you will need a weed supressing membrane (most garden centres stock it)
them a layer of gravel or bark

DONT use Sodium chlorate it is poisonness to animals

Depends what weeds, but for general application where you just want to kill them all a good systemic weedkiller with glycophoshate in it is good, Roundup comes under this category but tends to be expensive a generic (shops own) will do the job very well. If its for tough weeds such as nettles or bindweed you'll need a heavier duty one such as SBK or Brush Clear. These are available to the public at any good garden centre and homebase I think but tend to be a bit weaker than that available commercially they still work well though. If you have saplings growing in the path cut them drill a small hole into the cut and mix some brush clear with paraffin or white spirit then pour it into the hole. This will ensure the routes die off. Now is not the best time of year for weed killing though as the sap is waining . The best time to do it is when things are growing

PARAQUAT is the govenor of all weed killers (anything killer come to that) and costs less by the gallon than buying it by the pint in those poncey little sprays at a fiver a go. Failing that a trowel and a wife works well at this time of the year ... just tell her its an eco thing

Based on my experience, let me tell you this sad and unpleasent truth: there is NO weed killer :)

Nothing can kill them completely. It seems they die... and then come back after several weeks - it depends on the herbicide.

You can try various types - I tried Round up (kills them quickly, and they show up... soon), then something based on glyphosite (called "Sanglypho", kills them slowly, and it takes a liitle bit more for new seeds to come back to life - seems to be the latest "trend" in herbicide world). Herbicide application has to be done periodically if you want to get rid of weeds. That doesn't mean next spring they won't be there, in the garden, for our dispair... The wind IS their friend, believe me!
OK, and I also tried vinegar (which is in fact an acetic acid) and it worked great on my paths... several weeks. Plus, during that day, all neighbours envied me thinking I was preparing pickles at home :)

Anyway, I can't apply herbicides in the flower beds... from obvious reasons. But I mulch the area, after manually removing weeds (by far the best method, not only for removing weeds, but for my inner peace :)
I also did some manual weed removal on my paths, it's great for several weeks... then... Same effect as Round Up/Glyphosite. Weeds come back! But hey, my work in the garden is free!

Another way of getting rid (partially, of course) of weeds is to cover the area with a dark plastic/cloth, so the light won't reach those little *^# ... weeds. In 1-2 months you'll have a clean spot of... soil and debris (which you have to clean, of course). Maybe dig up. In case of paths, it depends on the traffic and how large these paths are... 1mile?

So, the methods you choose to get rid of weeds depends on the size of the area (I discourage manual removal of weeds on areas larger than 1 sqmile :), it's current destination (if it's already a flower bed or not...) etc.

Weed removal is a non-stop activity... So be in shape, both mentally and phisically :)
I try to!

We have to admit that weeds are in fact plants... in the wrong place. And very persistent ones! Continuing on this note, I will end up admiring them and... cultivate them :) with care.
Maybe THEN they will die (I did notice that sometimes TOO much is TOO much, even for plants)

Happy weeding! :)

Pathclear is stonger than roundup. If you want to be environmentally friendly - pour vinegar on the weeds daily and they soon die.
