Obviously, it's not based on an out-and-out true story because surely we would have heard about that if it had actually happened?!

But how 'inspired' is it? What really happened and where was it?

What is the basis of this claim? Seems a bit far-fetched to me.

By the way - did I miss something? Apparently there's meant to be a twist at the end??

I thought Hostel was way over-rated myself. Live Feed which was written before Hostel and along the same lines looks much better ;)

As far as I know [from what I can believe from an interview] Eli Roth stumbled [or was told, i can't quite recall] about a site where you were able to pay for killings to be done in the manner you wished. Like a www.hitman.com if you like. I belive Miike Takashi was also quite an influence - you will notice his cameo role in the film which takes place when the 'action' is supposed to begin in the depths of the torture house.

Well, "inspired by" is a broad-spectrum term. Hostel was based on a series of news articles depicting the disappearance/murder of several backpackers from different nationalities in various European countries. Backpackers have been going missing for decades, it has been in the news. However, there is no definite proof that someone is running a murder-for-profit type scenario as depicted in Hostel.

In Port Coquitlam, BC a man named Robert Pickton has been accused of killing dozens of women, mostly sex trade workers from Vancouver's East End since the 70s. Pickton is a scapegoat. He was in on it, for sure, but his brother and several members of organized crime were luring these women in so paying men could act out their sickest fantasies.

The Hills Have Eyes (remake) is also "inspired by" true events, but nothing in the real version even comes close to what is depicted in that movie. Wolf Creek is a more realistic depiction of real life events, although it has taken liberties with dramatic license as well.

Hopefully it isn't too true because those guys were too stupid. I hope no one is stupid enough to go to a foreign country just because they could get lucky. But inspired means not all true only gave someone the idea. But I thought the movie was cool. Best gore in a movie in a long time

well i saw it last week and it was pretty graphic as for being based on a true story you can only say that about a film if it is true.as for the twist in the end when the last survivor is on the train to freedom he hears the doctor talking about himself.he then knows that this is the man that murderered his friend and he gets his sweet revenge in the toilet.

the word inspired is the key to it all.

they don't have to quantify it as any thing can inspire you. the discovery of gravity was inspired by an apple falling of a tree. the film brave heart was inspired by true events. you will only know about the true story if it is based on a true story.

someone was inspired by it as it could be happening in reality who's to say that that isn't what has happened to some hitch hikers? the twist at the end was that the girls were working for that bloke who was on the train right at the start of the film so they were leading the victims right to the lair.

The idea of the film came from allegedly true events which take place in Thailand where underground gangsters go to small, poor villages in which residents sell family members to organized crime syndicates for exorbitant amounts of money. These family members are then brought to places where they are put in rooms and subsequently killed for profit and entertainment purposes.
