How can universities just hand out honorary degrees to high profile people when they have never in fact studied for them? Is this not insulting to all the people who have paid thousands and spent years studying for the same degrees?

An honorary degree is not to be confused with an honours degree, is an academic degree awarded to an individual as a decoration, rather than as the result of matriculating and studying for several years. An honorary degree may be conferred by an institution that the recipient never attended. The degree itself may be a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree — the last being by far the most common. Usually the degree is conferred with great pomp and ceremony as a way of honoring a famous or distinguished visitor's valuable contribution to society. The university derives benefits by association with the person's status and so enhances its networking and publicity.
And don't listen to the others, KEEP YOUR SHIRT OFF!!! ;)

Yes it is insulting! But you know one hand washes the other. Those type of people are rubbing elbows all the time. Brown nosing and just pretty much kissing each others butts to get what they gotta get and they don't care sometimes what it cost to get it. It's the pits! But you know that saying about what's done in the dark always comes into the light. One of them or maybe more are going to caught out there on the front page and at the top of the news being found out about the dirt that they do behind closed doors. Just be patient. You'll feel better when it all comes out to the public. Not that most people don't already know what's going on anyway.

Yes very insulting. I have often wondered this myself. I know I would be pissed if when I graduated someone got an honorary Biology degree and I had to work my *** off for 4 years to get the same thing.

No, its too late for Northwest just like its too late for Obama to put the evil genie back in the bottle. I think the accolades should stand as a reminder to everyone how Northwestern either didn't watch the DVDs Wright sent them, or is just posturing for the remainder of the nomination process and then wait for the heat to go down. Then Northwestern can resume promoting racism as before.

Honarary degrees do not mean a thing. Its not like someone is going to give them a job based on the degree. Honarary degree is just to appreciate their accomplishment. Yes, it will be nice if you put a shirt on. A lot of times its your brain that is more attractive and jocks appear dumb.

I agree especially since they (1) certainly have to money to pay for it, and (2) many of them couldn't pass the first year classes if they had to!!
