Who was "John Titor" really? Time traveler or good prankster?

as this subject came up this morning
does anyone know who John Titor, the name used for the purported time traveler from the year 2036 really was?
I remember he just dropped off the net one day but didn't anyone claim credit for being "John Titor" and getting all the true believers all worked up?
