You should keep anti-freeze/coolant in your car all the time. But you should also have it checked before the first really cold spell every fall to make sure it is still good to a certain freezing point, that freezing point would depend on how cold it gets where you live. You should also change your antifreeze every 2 years or so.

When you say put Anti-freee in your cari think you need to be a little more specific cause:
1. you only put the same color in there i.e orange or green or whatever the manufacturer specifies
2. NEVER EVER OPEN THE RADIATOR WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT. YOU WILL END UP WITH SOME SEVERE BURNS.
3. You put anti-freeze in when it is low and the reservoir should not be filled up all the way.
4. You probably have a leak, need to have that checked.
5.you always have antifreeze in your cars radiator unless the cooling system has a leak in it, it is never used up, there is a ninimal loss in evaporation but a loss from this source is so minimal that you cant even notice it
I think that is all you may needt o know about antifreeze and when you should add some. Good luck.

Be sure to mix the antifreeze with water (50%) unless you use the pre mixed coolant.Look at your overflow tank,if it's low,top it off--if it's empty, pull the cap off the radiator (when cold)and check the level there.

I would use ethanol-glycol, and nothing else, make it a 50/50 mix.
As well as it is an anti-freeze, it also reduces your coolant temperature in summer, plus it also prevents scale build up, inside your engine.
Get somebody who knows what they are doing to do it, and make sure it is bled, otherwise it will boil over & do a lot of damage!!
It needs to be replaced at the latest of every 2 years, personally i used to do it every year.

WARNING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do Not leave any Anti-freeze open in a bottle or container, although it doesn't smell nice to us, animals ( all types for wild animal to cats etc up)find it sweet, but it is LEATHAL, and will kill them with a long a slow painfull death.

Thanks for reading this i hope it helps !!

You should keep anti freeze in your car at all times. It not only works as anti freeze but as anti boil too in hot weather, and also helps keep the cooling system from corroding. Never ever put plain water in the cooling system. You should mix anti freeze with a 50/50 mixture of distilled water.

If you open the radiator (with the engine COLD) and the level is low, you need to add antifreeze.
If the level is constantly low, you may have a leak and that should be fixed right away!

if your engine temp gauge keeps going up after the motor has been running, you could have a low coolant level and would need to add more.
