I live in the far western suburbs of Chicago and my wife and I travel down to the city all the time. There is so much to do. I love Chicago and I think you'll have a great time.
I'll give you my "ideal trip" to have fun in Chicago.
You have to plan on eating alot. Chicago is known for its great restaurants -- so plan on steaks at Magnums, the Chop House or Morton's; pizza at Gino's; ribs at Carsons; Italian at Maggianos and even hot dogs at Portillos.
I would leave one night open for the Chicago River Archetectural Tour. It is so cool to do that at night and go down the Chicago River between these huge skyscrapers. It is like going down a river in the Grand Canyon only the sides are these huge, tall buildings and you are given the hsitory of each one along the way. f you are lucky your guide will also take you out on the lake and let you see Chicago's absolutely beautiful skyline at night. It is unbelieveably beautiful.
You also have to go to a play -- my preference is still Tony and Tina's wedding -- which has been playing in Chicago now for 14 years. It is so funny and you participate in an Italian wedding where everything goes wrong. You''ll eat ckae and Italian food and have a wonderful time.
Wicked is also playing in Chicago and a favorite right now.
As others have mentioned you need to leave some time to stroll through Millineum Park. It is very cool and be sure to check out the Bean -- where you can see the reflections of the whole Chicago skyline again -- but from a totally different perspective.
Along your stroll -- be sure to just walk up and down the Miralce Mile -- Michigan Avenue and window shop through some of the finest stores in the world. This is especially nice around the holidays because all the storefronts are decorated and the whole street is lit up.
I like to take in Old Towne at night too -- and my favorite is to have a night to go to Zanie's Comedy Club -- I've laughed there till my facial muscles are pulled and hurt (from laughter). It is a great place.
You alos need to be able to get to a Blues Club or two. My favorite is anywhere that Vance Kelly is playing in Chicago. Vance is the most entertaining blues musician right now in the whole Chicago blues scene. He plays at places like Rosa's, Kingston Mines, BLUES or the New Checkerboard. It is worth it to check out where he's going to be and go see him...and his Backstreet Candy-Lickin' Blues Band.
The Art Museum si cool and so are the Shedd Acquarium (Beluga Whales are the best) and the Field's Museum.
Of course Chicago is also a great sports town so the Bulls are starting up and the Bears look like they are as good as they have been since the super bowl season in the mid-80's.
There are also great neighborhoods to explore -- of all different cultures and ethnicity -- from Chinatown to Greektown; little Italy and everything in between.
I live here (basically) and I cannot get enough of this wonderful city.

Being from Chicago it is hard to say what is a must see. But, the Museums are World Class especially the Art Institute. It is probably one of the best Art Museums in the World. You absolutely cannot miss it. The Lake Front is also fabulous. I wood try to get on one of those dinner cruises they have at Navy Pier. The Oddesy is one of the top of my head. You go on a fairly large ship and have dinner will you are out on the lake looking at the City's gorgous skyline. Bring a camera for that. Navy Pier is also fun a bit touristy but, fun. Check out the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Ave. for some really nice shopping) There is so much to do. I would try those ideas first. Good luck and have fun in Chicago.

I have visited Chicago twice in the past 3 years. I live in Austin, TX and I love chicago!!! Lou Malnatis does have the greatest pizza. I also LOVED the pizza baked in a bowl at the Chicago pizza and oven grinder...Interesting place as it is right across the street from where the infamous Valentines Day masaccre of the Moran gang happened. Their mediterranean bread is to die for!! Lincoln park zoo is also fun and free! Navy pier is fun and if you go at night the ferris wheel offers an awesome view of the city. You have to go to the Billy Goat Tavern. In front of the Wrigley building is a stairway going downstairs and the tavern is down there. Great cheeseburgers and atmosphere! :0) Be sure to visit Wrigley field too!

walk the MIchigan Mile, it has just about everything....Also, try to get a good Chicago Hot Dog, there are several places around town. Get a downtown map and take a walk. The Lincoln Park Zoo is also excellent! And its free to enter, you just have to pay to park your car.....Lincoln Park Zoo is by Lake Michigan pretty close to DuPaul University.
Happy Travels!! I live in Michigan, and LOVE Chicago.
Also, go to a few web sites, google Chicago to get some tips...

WOW...BShakey has best answer..I just want to add a few options!
Navy Pier always has some fun events going on and it is a great place to walk around..and eat!
You absolutely cannot leave Chicago without trying a chicago style hotdog from PORTILLOS....and pizza from GIORDANOS...
I also like taking "out of towners" to Tommy Guns Garage..It is a "gangster" dinner theater type place set during prohibition. It is fun.
anytime of year is a great time to visit chicago..always alot ot do...dont forget the SEARS TOWER if it is a clear day. The elevator ride up is fun also.

Was in Chicago this past weekend. IT was fantastic. I had such a great time...The Sears Tower was the best, walking the city, Lake Michigan, Michigan Avenue, all the sport stadiums, The Rock and Roll McDonalds, etc. I was only there for three days, and was not staying in the city, I was staying and hour away with a friend, but tried to do as much as possible. The malls were great also,
