Just think,,, large self contained structures with large expanses for growing food, parks, trees and birds,, some on the surface,, most below to protect from radiation.

1/6th gravity sports, and recreation, a means of learning to recycle EVERYTHING and expand our foothold away from our ever shrinking earth bound resources.
I belive it is not only possible but imperative we start NOW to get off of this rock before it is too late.
Anyone agree?

I realize Mars climate is a better option,, more resouces a etc. But the distance creates more problems than the climate solves,, everything you need to provide a 2 year long misson to mars,, would make a lovely little moon colony in about a week.

Think of the moon as a launching point, to bigger and better places.

Actually not only do I agree, but so does NASA. The moon is a perfect test bed for setting up a series of technological advances required to going on to Mars, and perhaps further (like Europa around Jupiter).

Some interesting proposals have been submitted for preliminary setup before humans actually land again. One of my favorite proposals involves using rovers to heat the moon soil (called regolith) so that it becomes a "very" thin sheet of glass that with a small added amount of material on the rover makes it a solar cell. The rover would simply drive a few feet and stamp out a series of these in large fields which could easily supply power. The cost is very minimal, and to destroy it, simply driving over it will crush it back to moon dust.

Another important aspect is mining for Helium 3. This is abundant on the moon and could be used for future fusion reactors. There construction of the first fusion plant is underway in France. (ref. ITER)

While it might not be the best of vacation places, it certainly is a great test bed for new technologies and MUCH closer to home.

Glad you are excited about it!

maximum in all probability. Already scientists are finding on the chemical composition of the moon to work out if there is something that could help us make oxygen, which they have truly discovered some parts of there. additionally, NASA has been conversing approximately this for a whilst, and many human beings reckon that's mandatory as a base for manned missions to Mars, the place astronaughts can relax, top off on suplies etc. i assume it is not too various a bounce from area station to a colony on the moon. in all probability going to ensue truly quickly even with the incontrovertible fact that.

Mars may be the better option. Have you heard of Mars Direct? It's pretty persuasive and details specific plans for colonizing and terraforming Mars. To me, it sounds scary and expensive but it also makes sense. One also has to consider the financial, ethical, and political aspects.

Disagree. Moon colony sounds so expensive and so fragile.

We've never been to the moon, and we can't get there. So, get over it.
