My boss was giving my colleague a company jacket and I am absolutely astonished when he then proceed to tell her that she has to wear the company jacket instead of her own, which she has been wearing since she join the company. He is serious!

There is no company uniform for our company and he has no say in what we choose to wear. Right?

Get out your employee handbook. You may have it in there and not even realize it. If this is the case then yes he has the right to ask her to wear it. If there is no dress code she needs to inform him of her concerns. This also may be for advertising.

If the jacket was given as an incentive, then yes he can ask that she wear it. Every company has standards and levels of management are required to adhere to different assumptions of attire.

Perhaps she can personally ask him about how often, for what meetings, in certain areas, etc... She definitely doesn't need to make this a big issue, by talking to her co-workers and "whining" about being singled out.

She is either proud to work for this company, proud enough to wear the insignia or she's not. And her boss is going to know how she feels if this jacket represents a negative to her.

He can't force her to wear it. Unless you have an understanding when you're hired (or if a change isn't announced that affects all employees) regarding company uniforms, then there is no uniforms, and she can wear whatever she wants, within reason.

well, does he like her or not?
does he like her old jacket or not?
what's his motive?
for example, if she is his favorite he wants her to wear the jacket he bought so everyone knows she's special.
or maybe she has really crappy dress sense and he finally bought her a jacket just to settle his own discomfort??
or maybe she has big breasts?? her jacket hides them, the one he bought will show them??
Find out what's going on!

If there is no company uniform and it's not in her contract, then no.
