I know the answer is 103.71, but I need to show my work. I just plugged in mnumbers until I found it. Can someone explain to me how they got hte answer? At first i used two equations like
X * .08 = T

X + T = 112
X = 112-T

,but then that would mean (112-T).08 = Tand then it would beb 8.96 -.08T = T and I do not know how to solve that.

Let p=price without tax
1.08p=$112
p=$112/1.08=$103.704 or $103.71 if the govt rounds all fractions up, which they frequently do when taking your money.

Wrong....

X * 1.08 = T
So T/1.08 = X

T = $112.00
112.00 / 1.08 = $103.70 before tax
