Actually, United wasn't the only one to cancel flights from Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Advertiser (one of the main newspapers in the state).

American Airlines canceled five flights — three to Los Angeles and one each to San Francisco and Chicago.

Northwest canceled four flights — one each to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland.

ATA canceled its flight to Ontario, Calif.

Japan Airlines rescheduled six flights.

According to the newspaper, lack of planes caused most of the cancellations, since there was uncertainty from Mainland departure points about how functional Honolulu International would be.

However, there were other problems caused by the power outage. The outage caused scanning machines to go out, so carryons had to be manually checked. Also, the jetways, which connect the gates to the airplanes, also were inoperable, so passengers had to walk onto the tarmac for boarding and deplaning. Computers were down at check-in counters, slowing down that process.

All of these problems led to rescheduling and cancellation by several airlines, including United.
