The McNemar test was originally devised to test speech recognition software. It consists of a number of discrete items which will be evaluated as either correct or incorrect, and have no relationship to each other. Using the first word from a row of books in the library would constitute such a test. However, using a sentence of words from one book would not, because the words clearly share a relationship and therefore will affect one another in the evaulation process.
