the springs are both approximately 10 years old, the serviceman recommended replacing both at the same time, as they are the same age.

Springs do lose tension over time, and a matched pair is advisable, or unevenness will result in poor operation, or failure.

Good idea to replace both "now". The older one will have less tension due to the use over the years. This will cause uneven operation of the mechanism. Your repairman is correct. This way you will save the cost of replacing the other one when it goes out in the near future,,plus prevent any damage to the door.

Tension springs on what? Neither the question nor either of the answers disclose the device in which the springs are installed.

If you replace only one then it's a good proability you will replace the other in short order. That will cost you another service call plus parts. I always replace both as that solves the 2 serive visit issue.
