The Ancient Olympic Games date back at least as far as 776 BC. They were an athletic and religious celebration held in the Greek town of Olympia which was a sanctuary site for the Greek Gods near the towns of Elis and Pisatis (Pisa) in the Peloponnesos. People came to the Games from all over the Greek world - as far away as Spain and Turkey.

[if Santana_D wants to dispute this then he should speak directly to the University of Pennsylvania from whose website the information was initially obtained when I assisted be daughter in researching a major project on the Olympic Games about 6 months ago]

The Modern Olympics were started by a French aristocrat, Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin (born 1st January 1863). He looked at the education of children of different countries and decided that exercise, especially sport, made an all round better person.

The first modern Olympic Games was held in April 1896 in Athens. There were no national teams and contestants came at there own expense - some were even tourists who just happened to be near Athens at the time and decided to compete. The events included pole vaulting, running races, shot put, weight lifting, cycling, target shooting, tennis, gymnastics and swimming. The swimming was held in the sea in the bay of Zea. In all about 300 athletes took part who came from 13 different countries.

There are also the Paralympics: In 1948 Sir Ludwig Guttmann set up a sports competition at Stoke Mandeville for people with spinal injuries they had received in World War II. In 1952 they were joined by competitors from Holland and the Paralympics was born. The first Olympic - style games for the disabled took place in Rome in 1960 when 400 athletes participated and by the 2004 Games in Athens 3,806 athletes from 136 countries took part in 19 different sports.

The Paralympics have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games and since the 1988 Seoul Games they have taken place at the same location.

because of fact the Olympics are held each 4 years. And bounce years happen each 4 years. So the olympics all started in a bounce 300 and sixty 5 days, and persisted to happen in a bounce 300 and sixty 5 days. i do no longer understand if this become a accident or no longer.

Poklat ~
GLH is wrong, it wasn't 776 BC, it was 776 BCE and it was Heracles (The Roman Heracles Son of Zeus) that started it.
