I need an email alert on my desktop or in taskbar when receiving new email. Is there a way to do this?

If you mean through the Yahoo! Toolbar, there is a way to edit/add buttons to the layout. Click on the little pencil icon to the right of the big Y! and choose Personal Options --> Add/Edit buttons. Add the mail option, and when you recieve mail it will show the amount of new emails recieved in a big red number next to the mail icon.

If you use email clients like Outlook, Outlook Express, etc you will automatically have a notification in your system tray. If you have IMs like Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, etc they to inform you of new mails (if you choose to enable that function while installing) new mail arrivals.
