rivers bring down sand and gravel, and when they find some obstacle in the middle then they deposit this gravel and sand on the obstacle, as time goes on this turns into a delta

A river will initialy flow into the ocean directly. When the water flows into the ocean, it slows down and deposits its sediment. as the sediment builds up it will eventually further slow the flow rate of the river at its mouth causing more deposition. After some time, the river will be forced to change course to go around the sediment build up. This happens over and over again till you have a large delta and many paths that the river may follow.

At the river mouth, the river deposits alluvium. over time, a flat piece of land made up of layers of alluvium is formed at the river mouth. this is known as delta.
the river may branch into smaller channels called distributaries as it crosses delta. this is because the main channel of the river is often blocked by the depostits of alluvium. the river is therefore forced to divede into smaller channels.
a delta is formed when : -the river carries much materials
- the sea at the river mouth is shallow
- the currents and waves around the river mouth are weak

hope it helps.............

well....rivers are constantly carrying along huge amount of silt...when these rivers overflow...the silt gets deposited on their banks ....this causes obstruction of water flow...so the river water gets divided ...forming rivulets....this continues forming smaller branches...until it finally meets a sea or ocean...this network formed is a delta..the most popular on e..and also largest is the GANGA delta..
