if lobbying was banned, wouldn't that eliminate any legal catering to special interest groups? Clearly, if you got caught catering, it would be anillegal and impeachable act, wouldn't it?

Prohibiting lobbying is not the answer. First of all, it violates our rights to petition the government and our right to free speech. Secondly, it is not the most effective solution. The only way to curb "catering" is to remove the level of influence these groups have. In other words, limits on campaign contributions. Even with campaign reforms, there is nothing to prevent a party from trying to appeal to a certain group. Just remember, "special interest group" can mean anything - a group of mothers who's children were killed by drunk drivers, a fraternity, war veterans, doctors, teachers, vegetarians - these are all technically "special interest groups." People only have a problem with them when the group espouses an opinion different from their own and isn't that what free democratic process is all about? If you want to curtail the power of a special interest group, support your own issues by engaging the political process: a letter writing campaign, volunteering for a group whose cause you support, and of course voting.

Because it is in the First Amendment to the Constitution: We have the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. Thus we have lobbyists.

It's outlived it's purpose...IMO should be done away with. Perhaps after the JA trial in jan 2007 things will change.

GREAT IDEA !! I'm convinced. Now, all you have to do is convince Congress to outlaw lobbying, which they won't do because it gives them power and money and influence.
