I'm having issues with high ping while gaming. My ping will bounce between 250 and 300. I know that I need to close as much background "noise" programs as possible. I want to make sure that I'm doing this correctly. I'm running Windows XP Professional. What is the bare minimum to have running? Should I make any changes in "msconfig"? Something is seriously out of whack! My DSL is 2.4 mbps down and 440 kbps upload, and my PC far exceeds all game requirements. I'm at my wits end! Thanks for any and all advice that may help.

Your ping, or bandwith, should not be an issue unless the phone line is damaged. Your download speed might sometimes work, but your upload speed can sometimes be effected. Google some tool or website to test your bandwith. If it is fine, than its not your net connection. Also make sure your firewall and router configuration has all the ports open that are necessary. If you are behind 1 or more hubs in front of your router, this can slow you down too. Also is you network card an old 10MBS card? If so, upgrade.

If thats all okay, that means its either a driver issue, hardware or incompatibility issue.

Driver: try uninstalling your drivers (Video, sound and networking) restart, and install the most up to date drivers. Update windows, and make sure you have the newest direct X drivers.

Hardware: try another network card, if no...try another video card

Incompatibility: some hardware just doesn't work right with some games. Its rare, but I found some cheaper hardware (Walmart bought crap) wouldn't work right for my WOW, Doom3 and Sims2 game??

Try going to cable, 3Meg or above. DSL and high speed are not really good choices for online gaming. I went through the same thing myself, and this was the cure I found. Peace

ping is measured when you send a packet to the server/ other machines and how long will it bounce back, so the location of the server/other machine is also a factor
