they work for some and not for others as long as it's not a forced marriage i see no problem.

After all for some couples it works and love follows as long as the two people involved are happy, who are we to stop them.

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding of arranged marriages in North America. Technically an arranged marriage is like a blind date it is not like a shotgun wedding. An arranged marriage starts with an introduction like a blind date and then the people involved decide if they want to go further or not. Peoples values and characters are matched,,, and these marriages work very well. Love marriages are at times in fact infatuation marriages which fail.
I don't believe in forced marriages, however, which may be what some people incorrectly call arranged. Not all arranged marriages are forced.

It's one of the most important, life changing decisions a person can make. To have that imposed upon you is terrible. To willingly delegate responsibility for that decision to someone else is, to me, a deriliction of personal responsibiity. If you aren't going to take the major decisions in your life do you really have one?

As a side effect arranged marriages almost always involve the marrying of people from the same class/caste/faith/extended family etc. As a result, where they dominate (not in the UK where they are a tiny proportion of marriages) they reinforce the separation between groups. Acting as a barrier to integrating communities.

Personally I think they are a bad idea, particularly if imposed and frankly, even if they consensual.

Arranged marriages are traditional in some cultures.

The assumption in those cultures is that the man and woman being married are property of their families, and that the families (usually the fathers or patriarchs) can make such decisions.

My view is that it's best if the man and woman are free to choose their own marriage partners.

Yuk. Sick. Horrid. Some blind dates work. Some arrange marriages work- but at least you have the option with a blind date to say no if it doesn't work out. Never let it be arranged. I'm an individual - it's my life!

A glorified form of prostitution is what it is where money and status or religion overide the individual's right. They are a commodity in a market. Horrid. I thought slavery was abolished?

I think the problem starts when two different cultures are mixed. If you live and grow up in a culture where arranged marriages are the norm, then no problem, however if there not then thats when the problem starts. Not always of course

Since "regular marriages" don't seem to work very well anymore, maybe an arranged marriage is the way to go!

Well they do last longer than people who have known each other for years and decided to get married. So, I would not mind if my family and friend all got to gather and arrange a marriage for me.

As long as it is not forced, they are no different than other marriages. After marriage, people change. No matter how long people know each other before marriage, they become strangers afterwards. It's all the same; it's all going to end badly.

Some people are able to make it work and actually find love and happiness, but those relationships are few and far between. No one should be made to marry and start a family with someone they are not in love with. Marriage works if love is key.
