Depends on the "critters" you want to eliminate. Dish washing detergent works on some bugs. Beer attracks slugs. These are two.

Geraniol is used as a repellent.
When you talk about pesticides, you are talking about chemicals to KILL insects that have survived must pesticides applied now, and require even more virulent poisons to kill this generation of bugs.
The best way to kill them non-toxicly is to find another insect or arachnid that eats them, or to find a bacteria or virus that is harmless to humans but destroys that insect. Then you must be careful not to unleash something with unintended consequences, which kills something like the honeybee.

Borax kills ants.
A drop of dishwashing liquid in a bowl of apple-cider vingegar kills fruit flies.
A mild solution of dishwashing liquid and water sprayed on plants will rid you of aphids (as will a strong blast from a hose).
Beer doesn't kill slugs, but they get so drunk they end up drowning ;-).
Copper keeps slugs away from plants.
Ladybugs and spiders eat other bugs.
Cougar urine will keep deer away from the garden (and make interesting tasting food, to boot ;-)

Liquid soap, you'll be amazed at how well it works. Also, if it's cockroaches, diatomacious earth works well, it's also known as "dry-die". If it's mice and/or rats, a plate of beer will do the trick, you see, rodents have simple digestive sysytems and are unable to burp...or fart, so they just bloat-up and die. Peace
