I used to get my period every 28 days. And every month to every other month that I got my period, the first day would be /very/ painful and I'd stay in bed all day. This is how it always was for a lot of years.

Then in the beginning of this summer (may), my period cycle crept to every 40 days. AND the painful first day never happened again.

Now, normally I'm anemic (been that way since I was 12). About a week ago I started taking a good multivitamin in a high dosage every day. AND I'm supposed to my period (according to my 40-day cycle that's been happening for the past 5 months) in another 12 days, but it feels like it's gunna come today or tomorrow (which would be almost my normal 28 day cycle).

I've had my period for almost 7 years.

Does being anemic lenghten your cycle? That seems like an obvious yes, but I can't find any readings on that. But still, how come it changed from 28 to 40 days in the middle of the summer when I was still anemic? Nothing else changed.

Thanks.

I am not a doc, but I have some ideas to share with you, based on my complementary therapy practice and on a couple of sources.
Since nothing "physical" changed during the time in which you period's length changed, I would look into emotional or energetic changes. (as I said, this is once you have discarded medical causes, so I agree with th other answer, check with the doc first)
From an energy point of view, menstruation has to do with our acceptance of being women and our own syncronization with the earth cycle. (28 days cycle is in sync. with moon cycles). Let me give you a similiar example: I used to have a 24 day cycle, with no pains and no real spm associated to it. It did annoy me though, that cycle was just to short! Then, after an complementary therapies workshop, where I worked hard on my own ideas and beliefs about being a woman, my cycle went ouf to 28 days and has stayed there ever since. Thus, I started looking into the connection between one an th other.

I see another interesting fact in your question: anemia might be, energetically speaking, related to a lack or problem with the will to live or to be. Could this be related? if you are working fo having more "life force" (blood symbolizes life) could that also affect the "woman life force" within you?

Finally, There are two very good books that talk about this issue (not as their main theme) and that suggest that:
a. Menstruation is related to the second chackra, thus is is emotionally related to issues like guilt, money and sexuality, power, creativity and honor. (meaning these could be things you have problems with OR ares in which you feel attacked or betrayed). To me its interesting to note that in the same source, anemia is related to the first chackra, meaning issues with security within the family, survival, capacity to provide for yourself, etc.

So, what I would do is to ask myself:
what does this condition (anemia or your period changes) stop me from doing?
what does it allow me to do (for example, a flu allows you to stay in bed an rest, a 40 da period my allow you to get stronger with the anemia issue or allow you to have more sex ;o)
when did is start?
and which emotional changes or life changes happened to me or my close environment at the time in which the condition started?

hope is helps, at least get some ideas!

did someone prescribe you the vitamins? why high dosage? anemia doesnt go away with vitamins, have u discussed this with a doctor? u should look for the cause of your anemia (and there are many possible ones) and try to treat it according to the doctor's directions. 40 days is not what we would call a "normal" cycle. If it is more than 6 months this is happening visit a gynecologist too. U must be young, have u ever visited one? s/he could help u with period pain too if it comes back.

only 7 years.youre good.try 22 years.your period does naturally varies and the younger you are the more it varies.being anemic does slow down or stop your period well because in laymens terms you dont have enough nutrients in your body and body chemistry to support your natural cycle.the multivitamin will help your period come every 28 days because the iron you were missing because of your anemia is being replaced with the iron by the vitamin which is regulating the chemistry&nutrients in your body;hence if you keep taking the multivitamin you will more than likely come on your period every 28 days with all its regular nasty symptoms.

being aneamic can stop your periods altogether ,and it can kill you,the reason your periods are getting further apart is because in the end they will stop as your body needs this blood for normal living and nature wont waste it on a period as your heart and brain need it more,do you suffer from bad headaches and breathlessness,if so you may need a transfusion
