As stated above by Michael E. Many sounds in the house come from expansion/contraction. As a house heats up in the day it may make expansion sounds and as it cool down at night it makes contraction sounds. Things like AC/Heater will make these sounds in the System and the Duct Work can actually amplify the sound and also make it sound like it coming from different rooms, depending on where you are at the time.

Not to eliminate other possibilities, but I must admit that one should never underestimate the power of the mind. When did you start noticing these sounds? What kinds of events where happening in your life around that time? When did you first start recording your observations of these things (the mind can implant memories of occurances which were never observed as if they were actually experienced at the times remembered)?
What times of the day do these sounds occur? How frequent are the sounds (time interval between each event)? Are the footstep sounds regularly spaced, or random? What aspects of the sound give the idea that these sounds are footsteps? Are there any chairs or chair-like (wooden) objects in your attic?
With all of these questions, you can see that the best answer to your questions is further investigation. My questions are the best answer to your question.
I would like to leave you with my defense against the typical scientific response to your question. The best scientist is the one who is willing to investigate any situation for all possible explanations (open-minded), even if some possibilities contradict one's initial ideas concerning spirituality (or the disbelief in such). Whatever you do, keep an open mind and fear not; the answer will come with the correct questions/investigation.

In addition to the sounds generated from your heating, there is also the changes to be expected from the sun's heat on the roof - in the morning and in the evenings especially, and especially in a single-floor house. The heating and cooling down from these sources cause all kinds of sounds in the attic's structure.

Do these sounds occur as the heat is coming on?
Both forced air and boiler based heat can cause rythmic expansion, banging, etc.

due to the friction/wear and tear the heat is generated thus causing the noises.

Yes, as others have said, these are just normal house noises, fueled by your active imagination. :)

Might lay off the crack pipe and see if that helps.

Probably from those invisible people that tell you what to do. They have to sit somewhere, don't they?
