yes there are. try contacting the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). if they cannot help you, they can direct you to someone who can.

Yes. If your worked there and the dates of employment. But in most cases a reference is considered as a conversation between two persons about you; therefore, anything can pretty much go.
