I live in Scotland and had a scan at 12 weeks and 20 weeks for all pregnancies. Everyone I know had the same (at various locations through Scotland). I thought it was the norm. Is this a new ruling? As for not telling the sex - I think there has been a few cases where it has been wrong and has had repercussions on the hospital that it is now an overall rule that he sex is not told.

I live in Scotland and know that u can get scanned at 12 wks, 20 wks and as many as needed after that. Though i have heard of some hospitals in edinburgh only giving one scan. Just tell them that you would like more scans they wont refuse.

The reason that you are no longer told the sex of the baby at scans is because it is not conclusive...in other words they made a few mistakes and now are dealing with a few law cases. They therefore decided it would be better not to give the parents the option of knowing the sex.

There is also more than 1 scan throughout the pregnancy. I think you have maybe been given bad information. Contact your nurse at your local GP and ask her for some advice.

Unfortunately, it depends where you live in Scotland. I am now 25 weeks pegnant and was routinely offered a 12 and 20 week scan. Other friends who live about 30 mins away are not offered the second scan at their hospital - its ridiculous! The ultrasound operator at my 12 week scan said it is not the policy of the hospital to tell us the gender as it could be wrong - whereas the doctor doing the 20 week scan actually offered to tell us, very strange.

At 13 wk scan then the measurements are done of the head etc. If you feel that you would like another one at 18/20 wks then all you need to do is ask your midwife. Your are entitled to other scans it is not a case of not getting them done in Scotland. If you want to know the sex of your baby, then you can ask at the later scans as it may be clearer then, some health boards, however have the policy of not volunteering the information. I was asked if I would like to know the sex of my baby at my 20wk scan, but declined as it is not important to me, as long as my baby is healthy.

i am in scotland, and i had 2 standard scans one at 12/13 weeks and one at 20 weeks where i was told the sex. i was given more scans later on but that was due to complications, but every one i know in scotland has had at least two scans

that is not true some hospitals in the uk only scan once or twice at the most and a lot dont tell you the sex because of these religous cults and nationalities that will abort girls .There is no real medical reason to keep having scans

i live in houston texas, and i have three kids and my first ultrasound with all of them was in between 16 and 20 weeks but you could probably pay 300 to 450 dollars and get it done yourself.
