Oh that one’s easy. It’s a conspiracy between dryer manufacturers and sock makers. By having dryers eat socks, then people have to go out and buy more socks, thus ensuring that the sock industry doesn’t go into decline. LOL

I once thought it was a sock fairy stealing the socks. The reason I no longer believe this is because I actually found about 7 unmated socks in the dryer vent chute once, which was weird I didnt think it had that much suction and I still dont know how they got there. Seems to me that there was no way possible for that to happen, unless they fell off the dryer and got in there somehow. The search will continue for the sock thief. In the Marine Corps there is only one thief, everyone else is trying to get their stuff back.

I don't know either. But what I do is buy all the same brand, color or style socks. Then when one goes missing, I can match it with the next one that doesn't have a pair.
Also, I make rice bags with the odd sock. Fill a clean sock with rice, tie the end closed. Microwave for a minute or 2 & you have a nice heating pad for a painful joint or tummy.
Also can use the tied sock rice bag as a door stop, or a draft snake at doors or window sills.'

Actually, the dryer isn't the culprit, it's the washer. At the top of the washer tub there is a small opening which a sock can pass through and then out of the washer.
You just notice after the dryer because you're trying to match them up.

Pull your washer out. The spin cycle sends those small articles into orbit. With the velosity of the spin cycle will take the sock up and over the edge of the tub and it will be found either on the floor inside the washer of hung up on a rivet or something inside the washer. What I have found to be the easiest is to pin them together. If it is going to spin one out...they both will be gone and no single sock to hang on to until the other one shows up...I have a small laundry basket full of those! Next best thing to do is buy all matching socks and they will match another lonely one or replace the holey one, or stained one. Eat your wheaties and pull the mystery machine out and Ta Da!

I agree, I think most dryers have sock gremlins that go in and take random socks.. We have a basket dedicated to the unmatched pairs.. Kind of like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier this has become a mausoleum of sorts to the dead and dying sock pairs.
