Because people are too selfish and ignorant. They believe marriage is a fairy tale and get upset when they find they actually have to work at it.

Lots of people take it seriously.
But look around...with such a high rate of divorce, the stigma of ending a marriage is all but removed. So....people joke about "startup marriages" and "trading in" because they have failed on the first trip down the aisle and humor is sometimes the best way to handle disappointment in yourself.
I think that most people go into marriage thinking its going to last. But they get quickly disallusioned because marriage is not easy. Unless you are constantly growing and willing to work on keeping the lines of communication wide open....you will fail.
Marriage is not an extension of dating. Its a committment to staying with someone and building a life together. That means not being selfish...moving if your spouse needs to move, watching your weight so that you are healthy for your kids, watching the dollars so that you don't stress over money. It means going out of your way to support your spouse.
I think many people are too quick to settle for someone who doesn't really love them, too selfish to make the sacrifices necessary to be supportive, and too immature to see the long term benefits of working through issues. Many people believe that you need to be clones of each other or spend all your time together -- but the happiest marriages exist when two individually happy people combine forces and live together because they LIKE each other. (Like is as important as Love and Lust...)
Just my 2 cents...

Some people do but I also feel what you are saying too. Morals for sex & love have changed through out the years that marriage is just like something you do to say you did it.

Because not everyone does take it seriously....our society has made it "ok" to have short term marraiges. The one who are serious don't consider it temporary. Personally, I have been married twice, divorced once and in the middle of my second....not by choice.......when i said "I do" I meant it......**** just didn't work out that way....

As the old saying goes, "Show me who your freinds are and I'll tell you who you are."
There is a world of serious marriages.
I see great marriages every day! If you hang around poor people, you will become poor.
If you hang around negative folks, so are you.
If you like friendly peeps, so are you.

Because it is. No one likes to be miserable. Even in the best case fairy tale scenario, someone is going to die and end the marriage.
