They do not have to be the same size as long as you put the bigger one in the first slot because if you out it in the second slot it is only going to run as fast as the first. One of our computers has a 512 and a 256 and it runs fine. I did do it backwards at first and I didn't see any change in the computer so I asked my comp geek friend and he explained it to me.

The memory sticks don't HAVE to be the same size. It would be better if they were but not required. You MAY experience the larger stick showing up as only 256 meg. If that does happen switch the slots and all SHOULD be ok.
They do need to be close to the same speed and you do have to keep in mind that the memory will run at the slower of the 2 speeds if they are different.

I don't think that would be a problem. My HP Pavilion came with one 256. I dropped a 512 into the extra slot and now I'm rolling with 768.

i could propose getting a single a million GB. That way later you have the alternative in case you prefer to extra improve. in case you later prefer 2 GB and easily 2 slots you ought to not do it with 2 512, you may prefer to purchase 2 2 GB and what happend to the two 512? as long as your reminiscence isn't twin Channel, then you definately ought to maintain one 256 put in. i could purchase a million GB stick. it supplies you extra recommendations later.

I think it might depend on the motherboard and whether you are running xp or whatever? Some will happily work with odd memory cards, others however will just not - as usual with computers, it's try it and see!!
