Cold and Cough.
Rest, eat well and keep warm. Above all rest is a must.
A healthy human does not need medicine to overcome normal cold and cough. But certain thighs to sooth the breathing passages will help, hot bath, steam treatment....
Cold should last only 3 days. It is not cold, if it last longer. Incubation is 7 to 15 days and you may recycle it. In that case another strain may develop behind the previous strain.
All remedies are not really remedy they can just provide comfort, lots of people have given you those no harm trying all. Cough lasts longer.
The thing to watch is the infection, both can produce the surfaces that are very susceptible to infections.
The infection may go away in due time also, but it should be taken seriously.
On third day of cold the mucus will turn yellow, on forth day the nose will be dry and the mucus will be dry also. This should be the end of cold for now.
Good hygiene is the key to all recovery.

My mother used to mix up Honey Lemon and Aspirin. I was an asthmatic undiagnosed and would get bronchitis often to the point where I could not lay down to sleep, I had to sleep sitting up and this would often help ease my coughing and the pain of the cough and allow me to sleep for a while.
Also in the years I have been a mother someone gave me a suggestion which I tried and found works. Vicks Vapour Rub rubbed on the soles of the feet and socks worn to bed by morning things should be a lot better.
My grandmother in law uses ammonia and senega from over the counter of the pharmacist(I realise you said nothing from the pharmacy but I thought I would add it in case you meant prescription medications)
Eat a clove of garlic a day raw with an orange juice chaser. Sounds gross but guaranteed to give your immune system a boost.
Lastly get that same Vicks Vapour Rub and take a teaspoon of it and drop it into a bowl of boiling water, get a towel and put your face over the steam and the towel over your head to keep the vapours around your face, inhale deeply. It clears the nasal cavities and helps move anything settling on your chest.
I hope you feel better soon.

To coat the throat, 1 tsp honey OR 1 tsp olive oil. It is good to get 500mg Vitamin C twice a day. The highest food in vitamin C (that I know of) is a yellow bell pepper. It has 250mg (uncooked). It has even more C than an orange. Also, to strengthen the immune system to PREVENT from getting sick during weather changes: start off in a lukewarm shower and then gradually make the water cold. As cold as you can stand it, and stay in there for as long as you can stand it. Then when the seasons change and everyone gets sick, you will be less likely to get sick because your body is used to temperature change.
Chicken noodle soup, for sure. If you are at work and want to have a hot drink on hand all the time, take bullion cubes. Then you can just use the hot water from the coffee machine to make an instant chicken broth.

Honey and ground cinnamon has so far proved to be the best remedy for me and others I know. For me, an otherwise consistent and dry cough takes less than 10 minutes to die down after taking honey and cinnamon.
