HIV is "human immunodeficiency virus."
When one is infected with this virus, it decreases the effectiveness of the immune system to respond to and overcome infections with various diseases. There is no "cure" for the HIV infection. Once a person is "HIV positive," the person will remain infected with HIV for the rest of his/her life, and could transmit it to others (by exchange of bodily fluids; fortunately, this does not occur by casual contact, so HIV positive individuals do not have to be treated as different from anyone else).
Over time, the HIV infection weakens the infected person's immune system, so that the person is less and less capable of fighting off other infections. Microbes that would not cause illness in a healthy individual, or that would not lead to serious illness, can cause serious illness or death in a person who has been weakened by HIV.
At some point, the weakened condition of the immune system reaches a point that the medical community terms AIDS ("acquired immune deficiency syndrome"). The exact definition of AIDS has changed over time. I'm not sure whether it has changed so that more people are included or fewer people. But the point is that HIV infection is the cause of the condition, and AIDS is an advanced state of the infection. With modern drugs, HIV positive people are often able to remain "healthy" for many years before progressing to AIDS status, and to have AIDS for a number of years before they contract a disease that kills them. However, there is no cure for HIV once a person is infected with it. There have been tests done on immunizing people against the HIV virus, but I don't know whether these have been successful or not.

Being HIV positive means you have the HIV causative virus in your body system. Having AIDS means your immune system is overcome and have all deceases associated with the virus and you show all the possible symptoms of the deceases.
