My name is Mithilesh.I'm from INDIA.I'm studying XI standard. While solving my chemistry question paper related to Organic Chemistry,I had faced a question like this
"
THE NUMBER OF HYDROGEN BONDS IN WATER MOLECULE?

a)8 b)4 c)2 d)1
ANS:b(4 bonds)
"
How can we calculate the number of hydrogen bonds for a given molecule?
Plz help in solving this question.I'm struggling for this question since a week.

This is simple if you draw a planar diagram of the water module.

The hydrogen bond in water is a physical bond between hydrogen from another molecule to the oxygen.

Oxygen can bond with one hydrogen from a second molecule and a second hydrogen from a third molecule. Draw this!
Partial total: 2 bonds.

In addition the two hydrogens from the the first molecule can each bond with two oxygens in a fourth and fifth molecule.
Partial total: 2 bonds.

In total: 4 bonds.

Hydrogen bonds are a type of attractive intermolecular force that exists between two partial electric charges of opposite polarity. They should not be confused with covalent bonds.

Each of the 2 hydrogens on water can take part in a hydrogen, in addition the two lone pairs on the oxygen can do so also.

So we have a potential 4 H-Bonds.

Water, H20, can be represented as

H-------O--------H.

There are two hydrogen bonds linking hydrogen to oxygen in each water molecule.
