If your flat is a reasonable size then you could go for a cat, as long as the animal is young or used to living indoors. Otherwise go for small mammals such as gerbils, hamsters, mice or rats. They are fun to handle, easy to keep and don't require much room.

You could also keep a small bird such as a budgie or a canary, but they will need to have a certain amount of space to fly around in, to exercise and be natural. An aquarium is nice too, as there is a vast selection of fish that can be bought - it doesn't need to be a massive room, as smaller aquariums can be bought.

If you don't mind pets of the 'creepy crawly' variety, there are various invertebrates. Tarantulas don't take up much room, and some varieties are easy to keep. There are other exotic pets such as millipedes and stick insects that are easy to look after.

It depends entirely on how much time you have to give to a pet. If you don't have much time, then a tropical fish tank is great. Limited time, then a pair of birds but be aware they they make noise early in the morning, throw seed all over the floor and cannot be kept where people smoke. Rats make good hands on pets, but again get 2 so that they are company for each other when you have no time. Of course it goes without saying that they need a very big cage with lots of tubes and toys and things to explore. Males are friendler but as with all rodents, will soon stink the place out unless you clean them out twice a week. Ferrets make nice pets too. Plenty of nice adult well handled ones in rescues. Whichever sex, get neutered ones. They will use a litter tray like a cat will but will also need a vert large cage.
There are plenty of pets to choose from but you have to look carefully at how much time and space you have to offer and what you want from a pet.
Whichever you get, you will have an absolute responsibility for their wellbeing and welfare. They need space, exersize, proper food, clean living quarters and vet attention if they get sick. If you don't feel you can offer this level of commitment to a living creature, then don't get any pet.
If you take on the responsibility of a pet, then you HAVE to be prepared to put the needs of that creature before your own. If you are tired and they need attention, you HAVE to give it. If they are hungry and you have nothing for them, regardless of whether you are broke, or it is cold out, you HAVE to go out and get them food. If you are laid up with the most god awful cold and feel like shite, and they need cleaning out, you HAVE to clean them out. Keeping animals is a most wonderfully rewarding experience, but it's a bit like having a child. YOU make the decision to get the animals, IT had no say in the matter, therefore, YOU are responsible for keeping it happy. That means 100% dedication. 90% won't do.

You could get an aquarium with lots of different tropical fish, but this could be expensive, if your on a budget try goldfish as the equipment and the fish themselves are cheaper. You could get a very small house dog, if you get it already housetrained it would be easier without having a garden. You'd just have to make sure you take them out for walks and exercise.

invisible or immaginary pets work well in the environment you lack to describe.

Seriously, fish would probably be the best fit for an apartment lifestyle...you supply the habitat and they are thrilled to see you at feeding time...you can train fish to come to you with their food...it's really a lot of fun raising fish.

i'd say fish.. they are relaxing etc, but they dont really need much..

i saw a few answers encluding reptiles, birds and ferrets.. i have had some of each, and they require an amount of sunlight to give the vitamins not found in their foods. they also reqire space to run/ fly etc..

fish however maybe quite happy in a fair sized tank with enough foliage and hiding spaces. but dont forget to give them oxygen.

otherwise.. stick insects.. spiders.. hamsters.. mice..

hope this helps!

Firstly i suggest you check out your leasehold agreement (usually in the third schedule) as to whether you are allowed a pet (or if you are renting, check with your landlord) It usually states what is allowed and I suggest you pick from that. Usually it is "one cat, fish or caged birds"

A cat (if you are prepared to change the litter Dailey) a fish tank (very therapeutic) a bird they come in all shapes and sizes but the bigger ones need more room, rabbit (if you train it to use a litter tray) a spider (if you like that kind of thing)

An aquarium sounds the best for you or maybe a hamster who will happily play in a cage and does not require walks?

get a cat! just make sure you do not let them outside. it is so much safer for them to be inside! cats are so smart! you really dont need to potty train or anything like that, just so them the liter box once and they are good to go!

i wouldnt get a fish, or any other small pet. the are boring, hehe. cats have personalities! other small pets do not! good luck.
