The popular use of the phrase appears to derive from the fact that Wonder Bread - the first mass-marketer of sliced bread as a product - launched a 1930s ad campaign touting the innovation. As one source reports, "[s]oon every new innovation of convenience was being touted as the 'greatest thing since sliced bread.'"
However. good health is probably the best thing since or even before sliced bread

Before sliced bread was invented, bread was difficult to cut uniformly, and it must have been time consuming and wasteful to do a simple job like making a sandwich. When sliced bread was invented, it made life much easier for everyone, so "the best thing to sliced bread" is ANYTHING that is new and makes life easier for you.

The toaster! (how else are you going to cook the sliced bread!)
If you look at the below website, it gives where the phrase came from.

Anything you like that surpasses your appreciation for the great innovation of selling bread presliced can be "better than sliced bread". You're making my brain hurt.
