What is the logic of this? And to whom do you pay the subscription fee? I just don't get why I can't buy a machine and record what I want, when I want in FREEDOM.

You can buy one and record with it without paying a fee. The fee simply gives you features such as a program guide, the ability to search for programs, the ability to record by the program name instead of just time and channel, the ability to schedule recording on the internet while you are away from home, etc.

You can buy DVR's from electonic shops without a monthly subscription. ( London Drugs for example 299.00 to 399.00 Canadian) DVR's are a great replacement for casual programme recording.

The subscriptions usually are for packages with satellite TV or cable companies (Incentives to go with them.)

there is no logic, it's just the cable company ripping you off.
