If you want to talk to someone and not give them a chance to leave, you would hook your finger through the button hole on their coat.

To button-hole someone is to force them to listen to you.

Being button holed is a term many artist use for being known for only one style or in the case of actors one type of character and no one giving them a chance to break out into a different genre.
