I've just been on the phone to my gas/electricity supplier (Powergen) to set up a direct debit - and by their calculations I should be paying £140 A MONTH!!!

This is for both fuels, but it seems incredibly high to me. We have a 2-bed property with all the usual appliances, and I don't think we are particularly wasteful.

To others with similar sized properties - would you say this is the right sort of amount? I don't know whether or not I should be looking for another supplier.

Nope - I don't owe them any money, and I am not wasteful in anyway.

You need to really look at what you actually use your gas and electricity on. Is there somone in the property all day? Is your central heating on a timer? Do you have energy efficient light bulbs etc.

I must admit that it does sound v expensive for a 2 bed property. Did you ask how they worked this fugure out?

If you have your last 4 bills you should be able to add them together, check that they cover approximately 1 years energy useage. You will then need to probably add on the price increases which will probably be around 20%ish, but again you can contact powergen and they should be able to tell you the corrcet figure for any price increases. Once you have that figure divide it by 12 and that will give you your monthly amount.

Swapping suppliers may not be the best thing to at the moment but maybe see if they have any offers where they cap your energy bills. Be sure to check that you willnot incur any charges if you switch of cancel your package with powergen.

What we've executed at our abode here around the pond is...turn down the warmth top on the nice and cozy water heater...and as quickly as we choose quite warm water in simple terms turn it up slightly in the past we could desire to apply it....it helped decrease the fee in a million/2 for me. On electrical energy, turn lighting fixtures furnishings off once you're actually not interior the room, as with followers, and different non necessities. there may be a correlation to the time of day you employ it, call your electric powered organization and ask, In Florida, the kilowatt hours are greater severe priced from 9 am to 5 pm, yet at 10 pm at night, that become whilst the electrical powered dryer become used, for the fee become down then....comparable with water intake. Takes some attempt, however the outcomes communicate for themselves!

Shop around, they are all robbers, but find the cheapest and keep moving your account, they rely on most of us staying with the same supplier, trap us with low prices, then after 6 months whack `em up as high as possible. They expect some of us to move on, but so many people have moved so many times that they just cannot be bothered to move again, they rely on that to bolster their, already, excessive profits.
Most are foreign companies anyway, with no loyalty to us.
Thanks maggie, isn`t privatisation fun !

what!!!!!!!! - I've a 4 bed detached and both total 89.00 per month DD.! - have a word - you have have a backlog that that are getting you to pay off. If so, call them and tell them you want to reduce the paymts - they should be quite understanding. If there is no backlog then you are either sitting at home with the heating up full and all your doors&windows open.. or ...PG have made a mistake.
