There is more to life than money. Traditional electric utility engieers are a a dying breed. There will be demand in the future because the workforce is so old already, but it sounds like a profoundly uninspiring way to spend your life. You are part of an outdated and polluting industry that is fiercely resistant to change and progress. Instead, start teaching yourself something about global climate change and focus your career on mastering technologies that can help us address carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation, like solar, wind power and gasification technology. Not only is this a major growth industry, but there will be lots of entrepenurial opportunities with exciting small start-up companies as well.

Sorry to break this to you........... It does not matter which branch of engineering you choose.

Engineers, unlike other professions, ear less. Far less. They undergo the same rigorous training like Doctors, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants and dental surgeons. But the career-rewards do not truly reflect their intelligence and hardwork.

Engineers, by their very nature, work for somebody else - making someone else rich. This is true of about 80-85% of the engineers. They are paid to think and solve problems and make everyone's life easier/better/faster/ etc...

Other professionals, open their own practice and earn a boat load of money. That's the way it is - it's the nature of this beast.

Those engineers who open their own practice, do earn a lot like other professionals - but they are fewer in number.

My advise? stay where you are. It is the same anywhere you go.
