I am almost 100% sure I can't have kids, but just to confirm this I want to have a fertility test, what does this involve? I really need to know for sure if Iam fertile or not, so that I can emotionally move on from that.

This is what mine included:

1) hormone level check - they check to make sure they are at the right levels, this also tells you whether you are ovulating. Just involves some blood work....fairly painless.

2) pelvic ultrasound - to make sure everything is where it is suppose to be, and that you don't have cysts, they also check the size of your uterus and that your ovaries are in tact. This is painless and takes about 20 minutes. The worst part is that you have to drink 48oz of water an hour before and they push on your bladder to move it out of the way. They may also have you empty your bladder and they will insert a camera to take pictures internally. This was also painless...and is optional usually.

3) HSG - this checks to make sure your tubes are open. This involves them injecting dye in to your uterus and tubes to make sure they are open. A radiologist then takes images of your uterus and tubes. If they are blocked, this often clears them out for you. This is the worst of the tests. Mine was pretty painful, but others I've talked to have said it was no big deal for them. I felt a lot of cramping during and after. But it was cool getting to see my uterus on the screen.

4) Semen anyasis - they did this for my husband and it involved him taking a semen sample and bringing it to a lab to be checked. They check the count and also the mobility and quality of the sperm. Simple.

5) Pelvic exam - this was the first thing they did. It was no different from an annual exam without a pap smear. They were just checking to make sure everything was where it was suppose to be.

They may also check your insulin levels to rule out PCOS. If they find something wrong they can discuss for you a plan of action, such as drugs or surgical procedures. The tests (and often the drugs) are usually covered by insurance.

Talk to your obGyn...if he or she doesn't deal with infertility then have them refer you to a specialist. You might be surprised that all you may need to conceive is a prescription...but if not, then at least you know what the problem is.

Best of luck to you!

My husband and i had to go to the doctors after a year of trying and then they reffered us to the infertility clinic at our local hospital but the appintments are ever 6months or so. It's a lot of hanging around and i understand how you feel if you set yourself up for not having kids it won't be that much of a disapointment if it doesn't happen. But if there is still a glimmer of a hope in my experience we should grab it with both hands and never let it go.

I hope everything goes very well for you and you get everything you want in life.

Ellie04 answered your question perfectly. We've been ttc 2+ years and had all those tests done. The only tests that was bothersome was the HSG but it only lasts a short time so I would do it.

If you go to your Drs they will explain everything to you. It might start off with a simple blood test to see if you are ovulating or not, or they may do more, or something else.
