If it is possible, how complicated is it to find the right cable modem and hook it up? Is it a different signal for broadband than for tv? Is there anything else I should know?

No you cannot. You need the cable compay to turn on broadband service. It is not enough to just buy a cable modem. What else should you know - the phone number to your cable company.

bypass the cable company to go online... - Umm, No!, but you could set up your own server and have an IE connection, but you'd have to be an advanced IT tech to know the drills to do so, and plaus it costs thousands to do it (the equipment, cables, routers, etc.) So stick with a cable company, its a hell of alot cheaper.
