My central air unit has frost on the outside and inside. I just started using it for heat this weekend. It's not ice just frost. Any suggestions on what needs to be done to it. It worked fine during the summer for air and last winter.

did you unplug the circuit for the air conditioning this should be done before heat is turned on if not the frost you see can happen because both are on lol. you will find the circuit breaker for it outside close to the unit, just open the square box and pull the breaker out you can leave it at the bottom of the box so you know were it is.also change your inside filters and pull any grass weeds that might be around the unit use a water hose to spay the outside unit clean

to clear the frost turn the unit off and let it thaw, replace your filter when you thaw it should clear the clog then operate as usual if that doesn't work call a pro.thawing will take 4-6 hours.

It sounds like it may be stopped up. If it is a heat pump, you can switch it over to heat and thaw it out, but it will need to be cleaned out from the inside and the filters cleaned or replaced for this to stop occurring.

It sounds like you may have a leak. Your expansion valve may not be working properly too, or cap tube is clogged if it is that type. The drier/filter may also be clogged.
