The North Korean Army is probably quite satisfied.
They eat good. They have clothes to wear.
While the peasants freeze and starve.
(I wish some of these little commies in the US would move to N. Korea, and see what it's like to live under socialism.)

Kim Il Sung and the present Kim are glorified in North Korea. Kim was successful in wresting control from the Japanese and was also useful during the Chinese Civil war and freeing Manchuria of the Japanese. The North Koreans look upon Kim Il Sung as having prevented the Americans and the United Nations from dominating their country during the Korean War and with his astute aid to China forged a strong ally. Despite the hardships they cuffered, the North Koreans followed Kim Il Sung and his legacy in his son. If America, China and Russia and other countries had not had so many other troubles....China preparing the Viet-Minh, England with the Iranian issue, Russia in Eastern Europe and America in Western Europe, perhaps the war would have ended differently, perhaps even with nuclear weapons which Truman considered...but it became a war of attrition for China and the US and the world powers were content to end the war which was in fact a victory for North Korea and fortified Kim Il Sung's power. Asians are no more loyal than other races and to even breathe the idea of a coup would end in execution.

I would say a large portion of them sincerely support their leader.
They believe what they are told. The majority of citizens of the country believe what they are told too. Those who are being starved to death believe they are doing it for the good of the country. They have been told for DECADES that they are in a full fledged war with the United States and that all the surplus food is needed for the soldiers in their military to keep them strong. They blame countries like the United States for every hardship they are enduring. If they are lucky enough to receive any assistance they do not know that the aid is coming from some countries like the US, Japan and South Korea.
Those who do know what is happening in their country are silenced one way or another. They are not strong enough to overthrow the local warlords let alone the government as a whole.
It is upsetting to us who know a better way of life. At this point I am not sure they would know how to handle being "thrust" into freedom. Look at the people of Iraq. They lived under the same kind of totaltarian regime with Saddam for 40 years. They haven't handled being handed freedom very well. North Koreans would be the same way I am afraid. At least the way they live now they don't have to think for themselves. All they need to do is survive. The government does all the thinking for them. Life would get pretty confusing for them if they had choices. Imagine the anger they will have toward EVERYONE if they knew they didn't have to live their lives the way they have been ordered to. It is not going to be pretty no mtter which way this all turns out. It is like living in hell. If hell is all you know you aren't going to search out a better way of life. You don't know one exists.

The same reason Saddam and his son's were able to torture and murder as many as they did. Fear! Even Hitler was the target for assassination attempts.
