I think that the idea that his political enemies are framing him is the best defense they could come up with. The presidency in Israel is a ceremonial position; like the Speaker of the House in the USA, without ANY of the responsibility or power. The only thing the Israeli Pres does is make the final gavel decision that an elected parliment cannot function (because no one party has enough of a majority to be effective) and new elections must be made. Therefore, there was no reason to try to undermine the man.
In perspective, it's not as horrifying as the USA's senator who has been charged with homosexual pedaphilia.
It's about time people were held accountable, no matter what their position or economic status.
