I feel suprise because there are a lot of questions and answers about Vietnam, my country. But I feel sad because I recorgnized that most of them are about Vietnam War.
Even I don't agree with most of your points about the war, I do see that most of you against war and for peace, that concrete my belief of life and humanity.
But my question is why Vietnam War is still a topic for the public, students, and of course veterans in the US theseday? I'm not sure that how much the American talk about it ? and why? because i recorgnize here in yahoo answers, there are pretty much question about Vietnam but sadly most of them are about war.
or is it because the Iraq war is now ongoing so make people refer to Vietnam war in the past?
It surprises me because we don't talk about it much nowadays. and the young vietnamese consider that topic at school is such a boring topic (i hope it is the same feeling in American youth) and almost nothing in public beside ceremonies by gov.

I think for the most part you are correct that there is much discussion about the Vietnam-US war now because of our current involvement in Iraq. People are trying to mark similarities between the two for political reasons.

Many Americans know someone who lost a relative in that war, and as such, mistake or not, it is a large part of 20th century US history.

I have been to your country and have met many wonderful Vietnamese people in northern Vietnam. Everyone was very friendly and many people asked similar questions to me, such as "Do you consider us to be your friends?" and "Do Americans still hate the Vietnamese?". It is good to see that your people are so friendly and willing to move on from this tragic chapter in our country's histories.

The war will continue to be a popular topic for discussion because it still evokes emotion, and people use that emotion, mostly for political gain. Also, with such strong mainstream media in the US, and the fact that the war was the first war ever televised, people have a very vivid memory of it. We are making progress however, and more and more people are realizing that Vietnam is not a war, but a beautiful country with beautiful people.

John Kerry started all this crap about Vietnam early on. If he likened Iraq to Vietnam he could bring out all the antiwar sentiment. They are two different wars. Those that believe they are the same are just short sighted and ignorant to the facts.

It was the longest US war and it really resolved nothing.

Vietnam still fell to communism (supposedly the reason we went to fight there) and the treatment of the veterans still resonates to this day as to how we treat other veterans

And it is still very divisive
