if you want to be a programmer, you need C.
If you are a scientist, get python
If you are a web developer, try perl or php
If you like useless riddles, and brain teasers, buy a C++ book.
If you are a girl and/or like suffering for the sake of fashion, you'll want Java
If you are just toying around with a computer, and trying to impress your friends then C# and VB are the best

It really depends on what type of software you're creating. The best language for making a game is different from the best language for creating an accounting program, for example.

C++ is the fastest.. Mostly used for Games, OSes, and Other processor demanding programs. And the programs tend to be compiled smaller. This language is harder to learn. And it runs faster. And almost every operating system supports C/C++. Dosen't Hog alot of memory compared to Visual Basic.
Visual basic- Usage alot of processor power. But can create your progams in no time. When compiled they seem to be larger then a C++ program. This language is real easy to learn and it works great for people who are just starting to learn. However there is not support for other operating systems like linux. I would also get the most recent version of this language for .net.
Those are the most used ones out right now and finding information(books, tutorials, online help) on them is easy. However If you are starting to learn how to program then go with Visual Basic the fundamentals of programing never change just the way you write them(syntex). So if you learn Basic first it is alot easier to learn C++.

The best language for a server application is Java, however a language learning application is more AI orientated the best language for that would be Prolog, Babelfish is translation matrix but it can loose much of the nuances of language especially with some of the Asian languages like Korean, Japanese and Chinese. There are Java front end applications for Prolog so you can write an application with the strength of Prolog and Java
