I am using my home phone which has long distance that I can call Europe and Asia. However, everytime I dial my firend's number, someone else answers. I guess i don't know how to put the country code and area code of South Africa together to call.

this combination does not work:

011-27-079-391-XXXX

The cell number is : 079-391-XXXX

The zero of the area code is not needed. This worked:

011-27-79-391-XXXX

Thanks everyone!

011-27-83-62****

basically the cellphone numbers in SA start with
072
073
082
083
084

just use the 011-27 code and leave out the zero of the above numbers

You dial InternationalAccess+ContryCode+PhoneNumber

South Africa CountryCide is 27
South Africa cellular numbers starts with 72-74, 76, 78, 82-85 (according to AT&T)

So this is the sequence: 011 27 cellular number

I am giving you the best answer of all. Use your mobile phone (cellphone) to make a South African call. Dial +271179391-XXXX. You will get a (plus-sign) from your star-button of your mobile phone or cell phone. Dialing from the USA with a cellphone shouldn't be expensive since the US dollar is more powerfull than a South African Rand. Trust me, and give my 10 points.

Most phones in USA will not dial overseas. The solution is to get a calling card. You'll have about 34 digits you have to punch in ... the 1-800 number on the card, the PIN number, the country number to S. Africa and your friend's number.

Well it should show the dial-in code for South Africa from America...e.g. If i phone from Australia I'd use 00112779...or whatever the number was!! Sorry, I don't know what the dial-in code would be from the US

You have to dial 27, followed by the two digits which follow the zero. For instance, if your friend's cellphone number is 082-123-4567, you will dial 27-82-123-4567.
This combination will work for you: 27-79-391-XXXX

well, the S.A. code is 27 but this is how you would dial ( this is provided the rental cell is a South African number!)

+2779 - 391 -xxxx

yip, the 0 of the number is left out... the + sign is NB!

anytime you call overseas you have to dial "011"(internationl code) then you dial the country code(in england it is 44) then the phone number..you can call the operator, and ask for the international operator, and they can help you from there..
unless the phone he is using was bought in the U.S. and it has a U.S. phone number..best bet is to get ahold of the operator, and ask them the proper dialing sequence..good luck
