Whenever I hear that phrase, all I can think of is Calvin lying to his mum to get out of trouble and telling Hobbes that his mother was the necessity of invention!
On a more serious note, the wheel is the mother of all inventions.

The mother of all inventions would have to be fire, without it man would have frozen to death years ago. Yes, it's important to me because nothing is better then curling up in front of a roaring fire in the winter, toasting marshmallow in the summer, and countless other things that have spawned from fire. Without fire, we could never have ored metal and shaped it, never boiled water etc....

Absolute necessity - measured to be 273.15 degrees below necessity. It equates to the computer; these days, you just have to have access to one.

The fire "drill" (you know rub 2 sticks together to get fire) it gave us the ability to create fire when we wanted and gave man the edge in survival. This particular invention is not necessary to me but its descendant is- central heating and the gas cooker, electricity etc
