yes electric motors run more efficiently with more juice - have you ever heard of a 110 elevator motor, 110 central a/c?
480 might cost too much to have a reasonable pay back, but 110,240,208 panels are available. the 208 is only for a/c they have a big 3 leg breaker. change ever bulb w/ compact florescent - $9.99 -6 pack of 60w(13watt) @ home depot. open your soffits, vent your roof. If you have what the builder left you for ventilation, you have inadequate ventilation! builders care about getting the check at closing & getting you through the 1 year warranty w/o spending any money!

Your switch gear will not reduce your electric bills. You only need the higher rated gear if you are pulling that much electricity. Are you talking about for your house? If so, this higher rated switch gear is really not necessary (assuming you do not have some atypical system pulling more power). I would try some more traditional approaches to lowering your electric bills. Adjust the thermostat. A couple degrees makes a huge difference in the high and low points of summer/winter. Weatherstip your doors/windows. If you are willing to spend some money now, do it in a more efficient manner. A high efficiency AC could really help. A simple solution is to switch to more efficient windows. This will greatly impact your bills and not be a major process to do. Hope this helps.

In a home setting, in the USA, standard voltage in your house is 120/240.

In a commercial building, it is 120/208 or 120/240.

In a manufacturing or large office building you will have mixed systems. 120/208 and 277/480.

The 277/480 is used for lighting and motor loads.

In your home, the utility will not install 277/480. It is to dangerous and how in the world are you going to run anything.(TV,computer, refrigerator, vaccuum, ect.) without 120 volt service.

Like other people mentioned, change lightbulbs, more efficient appliances, windows, weatherstripping, attic venting ect is your best move.
