How to program key on keyboard to insert limited data into documents or boxes?

I recall that "macros" refers to a key on the keyboard that can be programmed with a limited amount of data. This data can be placed in a document or window with one key stroke. How do I set that up, please? I am running Windows XP. Thanks.

i think you are referring to the macros which can be made & used in microsoft word or excel softwares.

one way, and probably not the best way, is to get a logitech g15 keyboard.
