When I was in elementry school we took art and music every week from 1st grade till 5th. It was a required class not a choice. Do schools still require this?

Since NCLB started (and maybe before then) art, music and pe are almost non existant.
My oldest is 23 and the only time any of these were required subjects is one quarter of PE for ALL of high school grades 9-12. Only ONE quarter (3 months) of PE is required in 4 years!!
In the lower grades, music, pe and art is done every other day, or once a week.
The NCLB is pushing all this out because this law is mandating teachers to teach only 'specific' things, and this is not it.

Here in Texas our kids have music and art each week. They also have physical education every day for one hour which is way more important I think.

When I was in school back in the mid 1950's these were minor subjects, and yes we had to take them.
