Because many people think of the root word definate(which is wrong). To pronounce it you would think it's phonetic spelling would be the way it's spelled. If you think that's bad you should see how many people in Diet and futness want to loose weight. The word is lose folks.
And yeah, there are two s's in misspell. That's also a common mistake.
More:there for they're,except for accept, than for then, whos for who's as well as just adding an s rather than "s to words that already end with s to show possesion or plurality. As Larry the Cable Guy says,I can do this all day.I'll just leave you with those examples.

I know why I misspell and a bet it goes for others too. other than the obvious of not knowing how to spell that word, I say it is do to impatience from rushing and from being distracted, like when someone is talking to you and your are not paying attention to your spelling. I definitely think that is the reason.
PS: I used spell check before I sent this through because I am guilty of rushing through, hence a lot of misspellings.
oh and almost forgot...that good old lazy factor, you know the one, they know they misspelled it but don't want to bother to fix it and figure you will know what it says anyway.

It definitely is not an indisputable finding or inference! The basis for the Q is rather shaky!

No idea. However, if we're being picky, this question definitely doesn't belong in the Royalty section.
