Where I live there are brief power outages about once per week. Because of this I am afraid to leave my computer in standby. Is it safer to just shut it down everyday or is hibernation safer than standby if the power goes off?

Safest is to shut down. Often after a power outage, there is a power spike when the power returns. That spike could damage your PC. Hopefully you have a GOOD surge protector on your PC.

Another alternative is to invest in a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). It is a large battery that plugs into the wall, and then the computer plugs into the battery. In the event of a power outage, the battery continues to power the computer. If the computer is running normally, you usually get about 20 minutes out of the battery. If the computer is "sleeping", you can get hours from a UPS. The computer will never know that the power went out. And in the event of a spike, the UPS acts like a surge protector and will prevent damage to the computer.

A UPS seems expensive until you compare the cost to that of a whole new computer if the system board gets fried and all the data on the hard drive is lost...

Hi, I would get a surage protector first to protect the computer from spikes in the power line. If you are there and have the time to turn it off once the power goes out then I would get a Uninteruptible Power Supply this will keep enough power on after a blacklout to use your computer. When looking for one check to make sure it includes a Surge Protector. Also Check to see how long it can hold out before it loses power.
