As a geordie i always use pet names for people, but it has been banned in some places as some people find it offensive apparently, if its said in a nice way and not in a patronising way, surely this is ok? i think its sweet when someone calls you petal or sweetheart, what do ya reckon?

You are a sweet person and that is a kind way to reach out to others.

However, misogynist males have misused pet names so badly that many people are suspicious of those who would call them 'out of their name' or by any name other than their own.

But I still think you're sweet!

No, doesn't bother me one bit, been a Yorkshire lass we have many 'pet' names we say to people here and always have done, never found anyone who finds it a problem, my mom-in-law was a Geordie and I loved the way she said 'pet', they are just friendly gestures and if that offends people in this day and age well god help us, we won't be able to open our gobs to speak soon, ah pet.

i think it depends who says it. when i worked in a petrol station there was a few people who got to familiar and i thought it was just rude. if i dont know them from adam then i dont think its right, but if i got into a conversation with someone for a couple of mins then i think it would be ok to say take care pet or something along those lines.

hope that makes sense im hopeless at putting my thoughts into writing

I'm afraid that In this day and age and in this country..uk..wot ever we say is taken out of context .and you get people from this religion or that screaming that they have been insulted...what they should realise as with you people from different regions in this country have different ways and saying and that not everything said to them is some kind of slur or insult..so i say don't change for any one..this is a free country what ever yahoo tells you

I like it! But if I were to do it to people I don't know I would be a bit careful, especially when talking to people older than myself. It depends what the culture of the area is,

It just depends. If it is an old person then I don't mind. If it is a person that is the same age as me, I kind of find it insulting.
